  The Commonwealth of Dominica

From August 2002 - December 2003, we lived in the Commonwealth of Domminica, a Caribbean island located in the West Indies Lesser Antilles (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic, a spanish speaking island located near Cuba). We had many opportunities to explore and discover "The Nature Isle" during our 16-month stay and have included some of our favorite adventures below. In addition, we have created a page with further information and facts on Dominica, including major sites, links, climate, location, and culture.

Dominica has remained relatively unchanged since the times of Columbus. Although technology and growth have come to some of the towns and villages, there is still over 75% of the island covered by thickly wooded mountains and a quarter protected by national parks and forest reserves. Landing on Dominica is comparable to landing on Jurassic Park - you half expect to see a pterodactyl fly out of the jungle. Don't expect resorts and white sandy beaches if you come to Dominica. While Fort Young in Roseau is a nice hotel, and you can find some good restaurants, Dominica prides itself on Eco-Tourism, protecting the island from commercialization and development. Perhaps this is why it was an ideal location for filming of Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man's Chest. If you plan to visit, or want more information, please feel free to send us an e-mail. We would be happy to help!
